Kids and Cookies

My niece and nephew just came home from Texas visiting their dad. It was so much fun to get to see them on Christmas Eve. We have a family tradition of grüt on Christmas Eve. Grüt is a Scandinavian tradition where you eat rice boiled in milk, it is similar to porridge. After the meal, then we have Christmas cookies! Yum! Since we didn’t want people driving on our icy road, we had it at my sister’s place. Much food was eaten by everyone!

Ice in Tennessee

While I was in Tennessee, it snowed. Well, in Tennessee, when it snows — it first ices for a while, and then it snows. Which means the 1″ of snow is much worse, because there is a layer of ice beneath it. This small amount (small by New England standards) totally shuts down everything in Tennessee. The most challenging part is that at my parents house, the snow makes it very difficult to get up and down the driveway. My dad had to go out in the tractor and grade the road to make it so we had a chance at getting up and down the driveway. The 2nd picture here shows what the ice looks like on the trees down near the center of Franklin.

Here is a recipe of one of the soups I just love. I had it growing up quite a bit. Since it has gotten cold here, it is great to have some warm soups to heat you up. Let me know if you try it out. Thanks Mom for the recipe!
